Casting gallery - Create amazing casts
Welcome to the world of casting, providing you with insight into what our products look like when casted in a number of mediums
Getting StartedCasts can be made using a number of products and depending on what you are making there are a number of reasons. for example when casting large items a cheaper product may be better as it will be strong enough and be cost effective at the same time. Also casting in resins can be very rewarding so here we will look at the options available

AdvantagesThe main advantage of casting is that firstly you can make as many copies as you need, quickly and cheaply. There are also other good reasons, one could be the ability to change your parts which we will also look at how this works as we progress.

In general you should use a cheaper product such as Herculite for large items such as Model Railway retaining walling as its cost effective and for anything that is thick and heavy it is a fast and strong product. For small intricate items you have a number of choices, We do a product named Tuffcast which is a blended mix for fine detail and provides a harder finish, the reduces breakages when extracting, especially in Linka products. That is our prime reason for using the softer silicone moulds as they extract much easier than rubber. or you may opt for a fast cast resin. With resins the results especially on fine detail items is fast and you will not lose detail through bubbles as can be the case with powder mix products

Gluing Parts Together
If you are casting with plaster the best way to glue the parts is PVA glue, also known as wood glue, I find it better to use evo stick woodwork glue and then mix it with a really cheap version that you can buy from the pound shops, I mix it about 50/50, which makes it more runny but it still sticks quick enough. There are plenty of fine tip glue adapter bottle in the hobby shops and these are great for putting the glue on the casts.
After you have finished the model I would suggest you use a base acrylic paint ( I use white) any colour will be fine, then mix the acrylic paint with some water to make a thin wash and paint the entire model, you may want to put a few coats on, this covers any glue and so ensures a great finish, it also fills any small gaps so the model will look so much better.
If you are using resin, then the only glue that works is superglue, make sure you have a small bottle of solvent for the superglue just in case you do get yourself bonded, it is a life saver.
